THE SKIN – UNDERSTANDING YOUR SKIN

Getting to know the skin you live in and what goes on in each layer and how it works is pretty amazing!

How ?

By using the right product made for your skin type and a professional range from a beauty therapist it needs to be analysed and given the right products so it can be at its best for you and so you can look FRESH, HYDRATED, SUPPLE, AND GLOWING….

LAYERS AND FUNCTIONS OF THE SKIN…

The skin is the largest organ of the human body, and weighs from 3 – 5 kilograms of your body weight…

And most importantly your skin PROTECTS YOUR BODY AGAINST INFECTION and EXTREME TEMPERATURES maintains the BALANCE OF FLUIDS and even SYNTHESIZES VIT D.

IT CONSISTS OF 3 LAYERS:

  1. THE EPIDERMIS:

This is the very first layer the one we touch and can see.

  1. THE DERMIS:

This is the second layer and where most of the work gets done like sweating and circulating blood and feeling everything everywhere all the time.

  1. THE SUBCUTANEOUS / HYPODERMIS:

This is the very bottom of the skin and consists of addipose connective tissue ( fat ), provides insulation, energy storage, shock absorbtion and helps anchor the skin.

5 LAYERS OF THE EPIDERMIS

See below

  1. STRATUM CORNEUM

This is the only layer of skin we see with our eyes. They are lacking in almost all of their water and they are completely without a NUCLEUS at this point.

They serve as a hard protective layer against environmental trauma, such as abrasions, light, heat, chemicals, and microorganism.

  1. STRATUM LUCIDIM

Once keratinocytes leave the stratum granulosum, they die and help form the stratum lucidum. Its name lucid means (clear/transparent) due to the appearance it gives off under a microscope.

  1.  GRANULOSUM STRATUM

This layer gets its name from the fact that the cells located here contain many granules.  The keratinocytes produce a lot of keratin in this layer and become filled with keratin.

In this layer the keratinocytes become FLATTER, more BRITTLE, and LOSE THIER NUCLEI.

  1.  STRATUM SPINOSUM

and in this layer the cells are spiny-shaped cells, hence why they are called spinosum. The stratum spinosum is partly responsible for the skin’s strength and flexibility.

  1.  STRATUM BASALE

This layer also called the stratum germinativum is the basal (base) layer of the epidermis, closest to the blood supply.  This layer is one of the most IMPORTANT layers of our skin.  Keratin makes our skin tough and provides us with needed protection from microorganisms, physical harm, and chemical irritation.   The newly produced cells push older cells into the upper layers of the epidermis with time.  As these older cells move up toward the surface, they change their NUCLEI, SHAPE, and CHEMICAL COMPASITION.
